Important Update for Visa Applicants: The U.S. Department of State has announced a significant change to how visa interviews are scheduled. Beginning this fall, most applicants will no longer be able to attend visa interviews in third countries for convenience or shorter wait times. Instead, applicants must apply only in their country of citizenship or residence—except in rare circumstances.
What Has Changed?
Before:
Applicants could often schedule visa interviews in third countries where wait times were shorter or appointments were easier to secure.
Now:
That option is largely eliminated. The State Department will restrict interviews to the consular district of residence or nationality. Exceptions will be rare and based on compelling reasons such as humanitarian needs, medical issues, or foreign policy considerations.
Key Dates & Details
-
Nonimmigrant visas (B, E, F, H, J, O, etc.):
Effective September 6, 2025, interviews will be limited to an applicant’s country of residence or citizenship. Existing third-country appointments will still be honored. -
Immigrant visas:
Starting November 1, 2025, cases will only be scheduled in the consular district of residence or, if requested, nationality. Again, exceptions will be limited. -
Special cases (e.g., Venezuela, Ukraine):
Nationals of countries without routine U.S. visa operations will be directed to specific designated posts, unless they reside elsewhere.
Why This Matters
This policy shift will mean:
-
Fewer options for scheduling interviews
-
Longer wait times in busy consulates
-
Less travel flexibility for applicants who previously relied on third-country processing
In short: advance planning is now more important than ever.
